Cell Manners

Over two hundred million Americans use and enjoy cell phones, and we wouldn’t want to be without them. They’re an essential safety device, save us time, and keep us connected with the people that matter to us. Occasionally, however, people may offend others by inconsiderate cell phone behavior.

Unicel encourages our customers to use common sense when using their cell phones in public. Simple rules of etiquette when making or taking calls goes a long way. People need to control their wireless phones, not the other way around.

Here are some tips to keep in mind.

  • Get to Know Your Wireless Device. Phones are packed with features that are both considerate and convenient. Voice mail, mute buttons, vibrate mode instead of ringtones and of course, the “off” button, work wonders in reducing noise pollution.
  • Use Caller ID: Screen your calls. Let voicemail take calls that are not urgent, and return them later.
  • Use Text Messaging as a quick, silent option when in meetings, theatres or when talking out loud might disturb others.
  • Reduce your Ring Volume or Use Vibrate. Coordinate your phone's ring tone with the environment you are in. Use a loud ring for outdoors and silent or vibrating options indoors.
  • Silence Your Phone when you are in theaters, churches or other public places.
  • Don't Engage in Cell Yell: Most phones have sensitive microphones that can pick up even a whisper. There is no need to speak louder than you would on any other phone.
  • Excuse Yourself: If you must take a call during a meeting or in a public setting, discreetly move into the lobby or reception area before engaging in conversation.
  • Privacy is Golden: Be mindful of your surroundings when walking and talking or discussing private matters on a wireless phone – just like you would use discretion in talking to someone beside you.
  • Get Involved: If someone is talking too loudly or arguing in a public place, simply ask the person to be considerate and take their call elsewhere.
